“High school is busy. You have school, family, sports, a job, extracurriculars, service- and you probably tried to do them all at once. 1+4 is THE (once in a lifetime) opportunity to slow down and focus on two things: service and expanding your knowledge of the real world. You can travel, meet people you never expected, and learn to really know yourself. This is your chance to be a part of something unique and to reflect on what you really want your college experience to be. If you’re ready to slow down and simply be yourself for a little bit before college, apply to 1+4.”
-Madeline Weir, Tufts 1+4 2015-2016
|All students admitted to Tufts University as first-year undergraduates are eligible to participate in Tufts 1+4.
Non-U.S. citizens are only eligible for international service locations, and acceptance is contingent upon their ability to secure a visa to the U.S. for Orientation and Post-Service Retreat training, as well as a long-term visa to their service location.
Students who are interested in serving as Tufts 1+4 Fellows should complete the Tufts 1+4 application from their Tufts University application status page. The link to your application status page can be found in the email you receive from Tufts Admissions confirming that your application was submitted. The 1+4 application includes a few brief essay questions to learn more about an applicant’s background, skills, and interest in the program. Neither an application, nor acceptance to Tufts 1+4 represent a binding commitment, and we invite all interested students to apply.
Apply with your application to Tufts University: Applicants are invited to submit their Tufts 1+4 application along with their application to Tufts University. If you are admitted and decide to enroll at Tufts, you will automatically be considered for Tufts 1+4. This is a great way to express your interest early on and submit all your applications at the same time!
Apply after being admitted to Tufts University: You can also choose to apply to the program after receiving your Tufts acceptance letter. We encourage applicants who are admitted through Early Decision to participate in the early application round for Tufts 1+4 by submitting their application before January 17 (for ED I admits) or March 17 (for ED I and ED II admits). All admitted Tufts students can apply to the program until the final deadline of May 1, 2017. Please note that you must enroll at Tufts in order to be considered for acceptance to Tufts 1+4.
Interview Process: For each of our three application rounds, 1+4 finalists who have enrolled at Tufts will be invited to participate in online interviews with Tufts 1+4 staff and a representative from the collaborating or placement organization for which you are being considered. Interviews are scheduled for 30 minutes and provide an opportunity for us to get to know you better, as well as allow you to ask questions about the program. If you are interviewing for a placement that has a language requirement, you may be asked to respond to a few questions in that language.
Tufts is committed to making the 1+4 experience accessible to all students. Need-based financial support is available to any applicant who needs help defraying the costs of the program, including full support to all students who qualify for Tufts financial aid.
Applicants are accepted into Tufts 1+4 in three waves:
2017-2018 international placements will be confirmed soon! Look for updates in late January. Students admitted to Tufts through ED1 are encouraged to apply by January 17 for our first application round, and will have the opportunity to rank international placements after destinations are confirmed.
