This year in active citizenship…
Dear Friends, As we welcome in 2010 and reflect on the events of the past year, I wanted to take a moment to share with you some of the highlights of 2009.

Tufts undergraduates elevate campus dialogue through Tufts Roundtable
RoundtableRThe Tufts Roundtable has come a long way since the publication’s inaugural edition. With the continued support of Tisch College, founders Chas Morrison, Shabazz Stuart, and Sam Wallis have expanded their vision of bringing together the diverse thoughts and opinions found at Tufts.

SHOCCivic Engagement Fund helps strengthen student voice in healthcare reform
Since 2008, the Tufts Students Health Organizing Coalition (SHOC) has been making big waves on and off campus by advocating for student healthcare reform. Since its creation the student group has received support from Tisch College’s Civic Engagement Fund (CEF).

Professor Aviva Must researches obesity factors as a social justice issue

Chair of the Tufts University’s School of Medicine’s Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, Aviva Must is working to better understand obesity risk factors in adolescent and special needs populations.

CPS SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT

Noling_JohnsonCPS Scholars Kristen Johnson and Ann Noling capture West Medford’s rich cultural history
For their Citizenship and Public Service (CPS) Scholar project, sophomores Kristen Johnson and Ann Noling are illuminating what many of West Medford’s African Americans call the “lost history” of their community.

 

CITIZEN ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

TaiCitizen Alumna Tai Dinnan supports youth development through Groundwork Somerville
In the summer before her senior year at Tufts, citizen alumna Tai Dinnan ’09 participated in Tisch College’s Active Citizenship Summer (ACS) program. Dinnan was so successful in her fellowship that the local organization hired her as their full time Gardens Coordinator after her graduation.

 

HonkStudents Produce Films for Social Change
Last month, students, faculty, and community members packed Cohen auditorium for the screening of this semester’s Producing Films for Social Change course.

 

Colleges and Universities Compete to Achieve Highest Student Voting Rates
Tufts University and Campus Compact recently announced the winners of the 2008 Campus Votes Challenge, which sought to encourage voting at colleges and universities nationwide during the 2008 Presidential election.

 

CIRCLE Update
CIRCLELast month, CIRCLE researchers released reports on: the volunteerism of young veterans, the conflict seeking of democratic adolescents in republican counties, the effect of civic education on 21st-century skills, and non-college-bound youth.
