A Tufts Student, and Native New Orleanian, Looks Back on Hurricane Katrina

This summer, Tisch College supported the work of Tisch Scholar Talmon Smith, A16, as he sought to examine the past, present, and future of his native New Orleans on the 10th anniversary of Katrina. Through interviews with community leaders—like “The Wire” actor Wendell Pierce, and former head of the the Louisiana Recovery Authority Dr. Norman Francis—and through his own reflections, Talmon explores one of the greatest disasters in American history.

Research Spotlight


Tisch College and NCoC Release Latinos Civic Health Index

In conjunction with the National Conference on Citizenship, Tisch College recently released the Latinos Civic Health Index, which examines trends in political participation, volunteering, and neighborhood trust across demographics including age, race, national origin, income, and immigration status. Kei Kawashima-Ginsberg, Director of our Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning & Engagement, is one of the report’s primary coauthors.

Tufts 1+4 Fellows Start their Service Year

After a weeklong orientation on campus that forged friendships and prepared them for the work ahead, the inaugural class of students in our Tufts 1+4 Bridge-Year Service Learning program have arrived in Brazil, Nicaragua, and Spain to begin their year of service. Read more


Tisch Summer Fellowships Shape Students’ Paths

Nearly 50 graduate and undergraduate Tufts students completed internships this summer in Massachusetts, New York, and Washington, D.C., through our Tisch Summer Fellows program. For many, it was a transformational experience that sharpened their skills, drew them to communities, and awakened passions that will deeply inform their personal and professional lives. Read more
