Tisch College and Tufts Lawyers Association partner to recognize Citizen Lawyers

The Tufts Citizen Lawyer: Ethics. Respect. Compassion. Service.

Tisch College is excited to partner with the Tufts Lawyer’s Association (TLA) to recognize the many Tufts alumni who have gone on to distinguished careers that combine legal practice and active citizenship. Tisch College board member Neil Chayet, A60, one of leaders of the partnership explained that “A citizen lawyer does his or her work supporting the world community through public service, setting a standard for the legal profession's role in civic engagement and pro bono activities.”

Joining Chayet in developing the partnership were Tisch College Board Members Eliot Lobel, A70, and Dan Winslow, A80 as well as TLA president Debra Moss Curtis J90, Vice President Jennifer Covell J86 and TLA board members Steve Wermiel A72, George Hirsch A74, Brian McCarthy A75, and Andrew Merken A87.

As a centerpiece of this partnership, Tisch College and TLA invite you to nominate Tufts citizen lawyers. Self-nominations are welcome.

In announcing the partnership Tisch College Board Chair Deb Jospin said, "There is a natural synergy between Tisch College, which amplifies the active citizenship of all members of the Tufts community, and the Tufts Lawyers Association, which brings together citizen alumni who are dedicated to affecting law and policy. We are excited to work with the TLA in highlighting the outstanding work of these citizen lawyers.”

Curtis also expressed excitement at the partnership. “Tufts lawyers have a long history of active citizenship,” she said. “Through highlighting the work of these citizen lawyers at local alumni events and at next semester's Law Day on the Hill, we will be able to showcase the work being done by Tufts alumni while encouraging the next generation of citizen lawyers.”

Over the coming year, Tisch College and TLA will be collecting the stories of Tufts alumni who are citizen lawyers and creating an online portfolio demonstrating the breadth of service among Tufts lawyer community.
