Active Citizenship in the Undergraduate Curriculum

“Far from being a separate set of behaviors, active citizenship is integrated in all aspects of people’s lives. Lives of active citizenship are not a string of episodic acts; rather they are a journey, a life-long exploration and quest, a life-long process of trying out new approaches, and of rethinking and learning…

…Every department and school [at Tufts has] courses in which the intellectual content is combined with empirical materials, assignments, readings, and field experience so that students come away with both an appreciation and knowledge of that field of study but also with the commitment and ability to apply their learning as they take on roles of professional, of citizen, of parent, and of voter.”

Tisch College has compiled this initial list of undergraduate courses that teach knowledge, skills and /or values of active citizenship. The faculty members who teach these courses proposed to have them included in this list. Each listing includes a statement written by the faculty member that describes how the course enables students to develop as effective active citizens. There is not one path to active citizenship, but countless ways depending on your goals and experiences. However, there are distinct bodies of knowledge, practical skills, and sustaining values that contribute to your ability to be effective contributors to society. We encourage students interested in active citizenship to utilize this list to identify courses that they may find of interest. If you have any questions concerning the course, please contact the faculty member directly. If you would like more information regarding active citizenship or Tisch College, please contact us.
