The War on Terrorism: Where Do We Stand?

The public is invited to attend a conference, Jan. 25-26 at Tufts, which will assess the current state of the “war on terrorism” — its causes, impacts, and proposed solutions.

Chaired by Tufts Provost Jamshed Bharucha, The War on Terrorism: Where Do We Stand? will feature national experts in terrorism, human rights, international studies, and law, among other disciplines.

It is sponsored by The Fares Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies at Tufts, and co-sponsored by Office of the Provost, Tufts University, The Wedge Foundation (Fares Family), Tisch College, The Fletcher School, and the International Relations Program at Tufts.

Leila Fawaz, the Issam M. Professor of Lebanese and Eastern Mediterranean Studies at Tufts, said, “The conference is an important component of our efforts to advance students’ understanding of political, historical, social, demographic, and economic issues of the Middle East.”

Among the issues to be addressed are the costs and results of the war, the roots of terrorism and suicide bombing, and related legal, religious, and social issues.

Robert Pape, professor of political science, and founder and director of the Chicago Project on Suicide Terrorism at the University of Chicago, will keynote the conference when it starts at 3 p.m. on Jan. 25.

Tisch College Dean Rob Hollister is chairing a session on political issues, on Jan. 26. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh will offer concluding remarks.
